Hurricane season begins June 1st and continues through November 30th. There are many ways you can start to prepare your home and your family for the hurricane season before it starts.
Collect Emergency Supplies
Having a dedicated storage for emergency supplies can help you and your family in case a hurricane causes a power outage or roads are blocked. Store these supplies in a waterproof container and keep them in a place your family will remember. Make sure to edit this list according to your family’s needs, but a basic supply list should include:
- Extra food and water for a few days for each member of your family, including pets
- Extra medications
- Flashlights, battery-operated radios, and extra batteries
- First-aid kit
- Extra clothing
- Important documents stored in waterproof bags
Prepare Water Backups
Before a storm hits, start freezing zip-top bags with water. These can help keep some of your perishable food usable for a short time if the power goes out. These also can be thawed and used as drinking water if the local water supply is damaged from the storm. Make sure to also fill your tubs with water before the storm. These can help flush toilets when the water supply is down.
Place Sandbags
Sandbags are a great way to help block water from different entrance points of your home. Place them at the base of front doors, sliding glass doors, and any other opening your home may have that reaches the ground. Pile them on top of each other like pyramids for better stability.
